Folk Museum

The display house at the folk museum showed how folks lived in the countryside up until fairly recently. A peat fire in the center hearth kept the smoke level up but the midges away.

Portree in twilight

With the gentlest of shadows on them, Portree's unlit pastel houses remind us that we haven't eaten, and all the restaurants are probably closed.

Ah, the scenery. There was really nowhere to escape it.

Castle ? MacRae

Sue, you've got to help me on this one.

The Non-Reluctant Tourists

Wee Tun

Where was this? Other than High Street, I mean. It must be Oban, in broad daylight.

Glencoe

Otherwise known as the Three Sisters.

Yeah, it's not a mirage or a postcard. It's a real castle and we really saw it and I really took this picture. The story behind it is rather homey. The castle was in ruins and a senior member of the clan got family members to come up on weekends and pitch in to make the place liveable.

Our Wee Group

Both Your Parents Were Hamsters!

That's our wee group in the lower left-hand corner, trying to figure out how best to assault this castle.

Goodbye to Oban

We said goodbye to the landlord's Russian Blue, and to Oban.

Columba Sat Here

We are standing on top of a little rise in back of the monastery. Legend has it that St. Columba retired to this little hill to work, and the stones around us are remnants of his desk, chair and inkwell.
Columba knew where to sit. The view is great, the scene is peaceful, and the wind drives away the midges.

Bits of Holiness

Parts of the abbey were lovely. In this quiet corner supplicants could pin prayer cards to a plain wood cross.

Mulling it over

The drive around Mull was lovely, the weather clear and bright. Most of us are going to Iona for the day, but Mieko has elected to go to Stafford, to see the basalt formations. It's very brave of her. Mieko has been in borrowed clothes since the airline lost her luggage.

World Cup Madness to Mull

We couldn't escape the World Cup, even on the boat to Mull. This group of English soccer fans was waving and carrying on, in a mild way. The enthusiasm was so contagious that even we Americans periodically asked Graham for the soccer news.
